The industrial heritage of the centre of Inverness is to be explored by a Highland historian during a public event next week.

Eileen MacAskill will discuss her findings about the Falcon Foundary – now Falcon Square.

It is part of a major project to regenerate Academy Street with the creation of a new heritage trail.

A drop-in session was held yesterday as part of the project seeking memories of Academy Street.

Historian Ms MacAskill will lead the next session in the development of the heritage trail for Academy Street, focusing on “Falcon Square Past and Present”.

The event will be held between 10am and 12.30pm on Tuesday at Inverness Library.

Ms MacAskill will lead this session and share how she conducted her research on Falcon Foundry.

She will also show how to explore the library’s archive collection, including trade directories and newspapers.

Chairman of the Townscape Heritage Partnership Board, Councillor Richard Laird, said: “This is a unique opportunity for anyone who has an interest in Falcon Square to access both the library’s archive collection and Eileen’s specialist knowledge.

“The Square has a long and varied history and this will give an insight into some of the past and present trade and industry which has occupied this space.”

The heritage trail is a joint project between the Inverness Townscape Heritage Project and Inverness Museum & Art Gallery.

They say that local involvement is essential for the development of the trail and have urged people to come along to public sessions to share their memories.

Inverness Townscape Heritage project is a partnership initiative with Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and the Highland Council. The project focuses on the regeneration of Academy Street through its rich heritage.
