Dennis takes step back from menacing in new TV outing

A beloved comic character is being revamped for the modern age.

Dennis the Menace, who has been appearing in The Beano regularly since 1951, will soon be just plain Dennis.

He will still wield his trusty peashooter and be joined on adventures by sidekick dog Gnasher, but the 10-year-old is finally “moving away from his menacing ways.”

While the Beano website has already dropped “the Menace” from his name, publisher DC Thomson has confirmed that the change will soon apply to the weekly comic as well.

The rebrand coincides with the launch of a new television series, Dennis & Gnasher Unleashed, which started airing on children’s channel CBBC last month.

In the computer-animated cartoon, Dennis is joined by his friend Pieface and new additions Rubi and JJ.

His nemesis Walter “the softy” has also been given a 21st-century makeover, using his father’s business connections to ruin the spiky-haired youngster’s schemes.

Mike Stirling, head of Beano Studios Scotland, said the characters are evolving to become more “reflective of the world we all live in today.”

He added: “He makes mistakes just like any other person, but his mistakes only make him more determined to succeed.

“He has moved away from his ‘menacing’ ways, but still dances to the beat of his own drum as a mischief-maker and is very much a leader amongst his pals.”
