Heather Small review

Heather Small review

Cast your mind back to 1994. Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction hit the big screens and you could find me, aged eight, and my mum, bopping along to M People on my way to primary school in her Clio.

A vivid memory I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

So when the chance arose to go see Heather Small, the band’s front woman, in concert at the Music Hall in Aberdeen I jumped at the chance. And of course I had to take my mum.

Entering the stage in a sparkly silver jumpsuit, which resembled the glitter balls of my youth, her powerful signature vocals reminded me why she had me so spellbound at such a young age.

And although it’s 15 years on, you would struggle to tell when she started singing the hits from M People’s most famous album, Elegant Slumming.

Kicking off with One Night in Heaven, I was transported right back to my youth and she had everyone in the audience on their feet.

Despite only making it to ninth place in Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, Small showed she was more than capable on the dance floor too, as her impressive vocals were matched equally by her moves on stage.

As the night went on the nostalgia intensified and by the end I was left feeling 25-years younger.

If that’s not an endorsement for ticket sales I don’t know what is!
