Fears have been raised for the future of a popular north-east running club after news emerged the organisation faces a national funding crisis.
Jog Scotland has a network of 300 branches across the country, including club in Fraserburgh and in Peterhead, but the initiative is under threat because Sportscotland plans to reduce funding by 20%.
Scottish Athletics, which runs the scheme to encourage non-club runners to exercise, said it was shocked by the move which will slash funding by £100,000.
And now, north-east councillor Hamish Partridge has warned Fraserburgh could lose a vital part of its regeneration efforts.
He said: “Fraserburgh is a priority regeneration area and part of that initiative is to improve fitness, health and deliver sports through Active Fraserburgh.”
The independent councillor argued the local authority had shown “commitment” by providing modern sports facilities and backing new community pitches in the region, but warned groups would fold without funding from central government.
He added: “This cut in funding concerns me with the knock-on effect this may have on our already stretched NHS.
“If people are not taking part in these initiatives with clubs which promote healthier lifestyles, this just adds pressure to our medical and health services.”
Mr Partridge has backed an online petition urging a rethink on the funding cuts.
A spokesman for the Scottish government said that, last year, Sportscotland gave Jog Scotland a one-off £50,000 boost.
He added: “In terms of the budget allocations for 2017-18, Scottish Athletics will discuss with Sportscotland how they plan to carry forward their strategic plan and their priorities for the forthcoming year.”
