Closure looms for Aberdeen school left behind by education changes

An Aberdeen school, left behind by changes to the education system, now faces permanent closure.

People were yesterday asked to respond to a newly-launched public consultation on plans to shut down Cordyce School in Dyce.

The secondary establishment has been left without any pupils after young people with mental, emotional and social support needs were incorporated into mainstream schools.

No pupils were enrolled there this year, and the local authority intends to close it in April.

When the school had a full roll, it had the highest running cost per pupil of all the schools in Aberdeen at £145,760 every year.

While the building remains standing, but not operating as a school, the council will have to pay £82,000 in non-domestic rates for it.

The consultation will run until 5pm on Friday, October 13, and feedback will be included in a report which will go before councilors in January.

A public meeting to discuss the proposals will take place from 7pm to 8pm at Bucksburn Academy on Wednesday, September 20.

People can offer their opinions online at www.consultation.aberdeencity.gov.uk/

Alternatively, comments can be emailed to schoolestate@aberdeencity.gov.uk

And responses can also be posted to Cordyce School Consultation, Education and Children’s Services, Aberdeen City Council, Business Hub 13, Second Floor North, Marischal College, AB10 1AB.
