Aberdeen flights disruption as Manchester’s runway closes

Snow and ice caused disruption to many people’s travel plans yesterday as a number of flights to Aberdeen had to be cancelled.

Services, scheduled to arrive in Aberdeen from Amsterdam and Manchester were axed, while those airports dealt with issues caused by the wintry weather.

A spokeswoman for Aberdeen Airport last night said: “We’ve had departing and arriving flights cancelled due to the runway closure at Manchester Airport.

“Our advice would be to check with the airline prior to travel for the latest news about potential delays or cancellations.”

North-east schools remained open, but Alford Academy, Craigievar School, Methlick School and Midmar School all reported changes or cancellations to school transport.

Council gritters were out yesterday treating the vast road network across the region.

Aberdeenshire Council’s head of roads, landscape services and waste services, Philip McKay said last night: “With such a large network to look after, our winter maintenance plan is based on a prioritised regime.

“Over 1,000 miles of our main roads are treated on a precautionary basis. The actual treatment plan each evening and morning is based around detailed weather forecast information designed specifically for our needs.

“This spell of cold wintry weather is forecast to continue for a number of days yet, with another Yellow Warning for Snow and Ice covering Thursday night into Friday morning.

“We therefore ask road users to plan their journeys appropriately and regularly check local weather forecasts, and @AbshireRoads twitter account, as conditions can vary dramatically across such as large geographical area as Aberdeenshire.”
