Retired joiner donates all his tools to Bridge of Don men’s shed

A club which offers retired men the chance to keep busy by practising their handy work has been gifted £500 worth of tools by a retired joiner.

The veteran craftsman, who asked to remain anonymous, donated his work bench and all his equipment to the Bridge of Don and District Men’s Shed.

The modest Aberdeen man said: “I hope it will be an asset to our growing community, which I have been a part of for 61 years.”

Secretary of the Men’s Shed group, Eric Bisset, said: “We were delighted to receive this generous donation and will be making good use of it in the near future.

“Our men will use them on projects for the local community, such as the recent 10-feet boat in the soft play area at Glashieburn Primary School and wheelchair-friendly flower planters we made for Oldmachar Academy.

“We want to be known in the community as a friendly, helpful local organisation that works for the good of everyone in Bridge of Don and the surrounding area.”

The donation came just days after the group was given permission to build portable cabins for its meetings.

Although the men’s shed has been in operation for more than two years, members have struggled to find a permanent home.

A planning application, seeking permission to set up new buildings at the Alex Collie Centre on Cardens Knowe, was backed by Aberdeen City Council on Monday.

An area has been earmarked for the cabins at the end of the community centre car park next to the local scout hut.

The buildings will be in place for a period of two years, during which time the Men’s Shed group will continue to look for permanent premises.

The mystery benefactor said only that he hoped the donation of tools would be “an asset to our growing community, which I have been part of for 61 years”.

He added: “I wish them all the success when they find permanent premises.”
