Four people were rescued from a first floor window after a fire broke out beneath an ice cream shop this weekend.

Firefighters in Aberdeen were called to Shakes and Cakes, 149 Spital, at 4.39am on Saturday.

Four appliances attended at the scene, where it emerged the blaze had started in the basement below the shop and spread upwards through the building.

Firefighters then scaled the building to reach the first floor window of a flat above Shakes and Cakes. Four people were rescued and taken to a waiting ambulance.

Police tape cordoned off the property where piles of burnt debris could still be seen yesterday. The front door of the premises was also smashed during the rescue.

A fire spokesman said: “We were alerted at 4.39am on Saturday May 2 to reports of a fire within a building in Aberdeen.

“We mobilised four appliances to the city’s Spital, where crews were met by a fire within a three storey building.”

Firefighters remained on scene until 10.35am today.

A police spokesman added: “A number of people were evacuated from flats and the Scottish Ambulance service was in attendance as a precaution.

“The fire is not being treated as suspicious.”

Shakes and Cakes posted on their Facebook page that their Spital branch was “temporarily closed” and that all collections and deliveries must be made through their Great Northern Road branch.
