A firm fronted by F1 legend David Coulthard is planning a new hotel for Aberdeen – made entirely from shipping containers.

The 80-room venue could open for a temporary period of five years in the city’s Bridge of Don.

The company behind it, Snoozebox, has lodged plans with Aberdeen City Council.

Its president, Mr Coulthard, gave it its first breakthrough when it provided accommodation for spectators at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone

The Aberdeen base would feature 160 beds – potentially available for oil workers and the wider public.

It is thought each container could house four rooms – all with en-suite bathrooms.

A spokesman for the company said: “Snoozebox continues to explore a host of opportunities in key cities throughout the UK to create semi-permanent hotels and accommodation units.

“As part of the process, Snoozebox regularly holds discussions and develops plans to progress opportunities.

“The company does not comment on opportunities under development that may or may not have been concluded.”

Snoozebox hotels, which can run up to 240 rooms, feature a normal reception and services such as daily housekeeping and a 24-hour duty manager.

A “social hub” could also be included, with room for a restaurant and bar.

Bridge of Don councillor Muriel Jaffrey said she was “sceptical” of the plans.

She said: “I would definitely be worried and sceptical because a company like this must realise that Bridge of Don isn’t simply a dump.

“I’m sure if David Coulthard is involved with Snoozebox then the company must be reputable.

“I wouldn’t have thought that the middle of an industrial estate would be the obvious area.

“I will be fascinated to see how this project will look because it’s something Aberdeen has never had before.”
