Police in Aberdeen speed-checked 100 vehicles and cautioned 30 drivers in a “day of action” to target nuisance motorists this week.

Officers from Aberdeen City division’s Hazlehead community policing team conducted the operation to clamp down on speeding and inconsiderate driving in the Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and Peterculter areas.

Local police worked alongside road policing officers between 8am and 4pm on Monday to address concerns raised by residents.

A total of 100 vehicles had their speeds noted, with 30 motorists warned or charged in relation to speeding, not wearing a seatbelt or vehicle checks.

The action was taken under the Operation Whitebeam initiative. Launched in October 2013, the aim is to highlight the importance of road safety in the city and to detect and disrupt anti-social and irresponsible drivers.

Its particular focus is on dangerous driving, drink driving and speeding.

PC Jennifer MacDonald, who led the day of action, said: “This operation was run in direct response to the concerns of local residents about the poor driving standards of a minority of drivers.

“Road safety is a priority for our team and we are committed to making our roads safer through further initiatives in the future.”

Sergeant Craig Mewha of Hazlehead community policing team said: “We were responding to a number of concerns from local residents.

“We have officers routinely deployed in the area to tackle these issues.”
