A new image, showing a proposed expansion of a major city shopping centre in Aberdeen has been unveiled.

The artist’s impression demonstrates how a glass roof over the George Street entrance to the city’s Bon Accord Centre might look.

Bosses at the facility have released the image as part of a consultation process into the centre’s redevelopment.

Shoppers have been asked to give their views on how they would like to see the amenity improved, with the majority calling for an enhanced entrance on George Street, as well as redevelopment of Loch Street and Crooked Lane.

Owners BMO Real Estate Partners will present a range of design proposals at a second public consultation today.

The proposals are on display in the main atrium of the centre between 4 and 8pm.

Joanne Wilkes, who works for BMO, said: “The Bon Accord and St Nicholas centres play an important role in the retail heart of the city centre, and we were extremely pleased with the level of support and encouragement our development ideas received at the first consultation event.

“Local people want to see focus and investment in the heart of the city, and we believe our proposals, which have been guided by the vision of the city centre masterplan, help deliver that.

“The designs being presented are based on feedback from local people and stakeholders and focus on the George Street entrance into the Bon Accord [centre], alongside the pedestrian crossing on Upperkirkgate and Schoolhill and the space leading into the St Nicholas Centre from Union Street.”

More than 150 people attended the initial consultation in August, which looked at a range of potential renovation ideas.

Support for enhancing the pedestrian crossing at Upperkirkgate and Schoolhill and improving the link between the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centre also received backing from the public.

In a survey, 76% of people voted for improvements to the central thoroughfare, which sees more than 20 million pedestrians crossing it every year.
