Streets to be closed for works ahead of Broad Street pedestrianisation

Broad Street in Aberdeen.
Broad Street in Aberdeen.

Work is set to begin on three city centre roads ahead of the £3.2million pedestrianisation of Broad Street.

Schoolhill, Littlejohn Street, and the Gallowgate are to be closed to allow the works to be carried out in anticipation of increased traffic when Broad Street is closed.

The closures will mostly take place overnight to minimise disruption.

Schoolhill between the junction of Back Wynd and Harriet Street will have overnight closures from 7pm on Monday, March 6 until 6am on Saturday, March 11. During the day, it will be one lane only, open to west-bound traffic, next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The entire length of Littlejohn Street from the Gallowgate to West North Street is to be resurfaced. It will be closed overnight from 7pm on Monday until 5am on Saturday, March 11. There will be no parking on Littlejohn Street during this period, including the disabled bays and Co-Wheels spaces.

The Gallowgate from Broad Street to Berry Street, is to have overnight closures from 7pm on Monday, March 13 until 5am on Saturday, March 18.

A council spokeswoman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to road users however the works are necessary to ensure the quality of the road surface before Broad Street is closed.”

The council’s finance committee has been informed that the anticipated work may not be completed by its set date of July- when the Marischal Square development is due to open.

As part of the planned changes a mini roundabout and toucan crossing will be added to Broad Street.

Cars will be banned from the space but it will be open to buses and bicycles.
