Members of a north-east nuclear disarmament group are holding a vigil this weekend at Faslane Naval Base in opposition to the UK’s possession of nuclear weapons.
Faslane is home to the Trident-armed nuclear submarine fleet and 30 activists from the Aberdeen and District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament are expected to make the journey to the base near Glasgow.
The vigil will take place on Saturday afternoon and members of the campaign will also be providing support in the form food, batteries and first aid supplies to the permanent Faslane Peace Camp, which has been occupied continuously in various locations since 1982.
Jonathan Russell, chair of the Aberdeen CND, said: “Nuclear weapons don’t really defend us. The places they would target would be other places with nuclear weapons and there are much better ways to spend the money.
“Faslane is just 25 miles away from Scotland’s biggest city Glasgow. Glasgow is also at risk is any nuclear accidents happened and we would all be affected by nuclear fallout.
“Our aim is to hold a peaceful vigil to show our opposition to nuclear weapons. We are going to take flowers and have a socially fun time with a vigil which is peaceful and positive and the opposite of what the base represents.”
