Aberdeen pupils enjoyed a special visit to the city’s newest recycling facility yesterday.
The £27million Altens East Recycling and Resource Facility opened in 2017, and was hailed as the country’s “most advanced” recycling facility.
Now Suez Recycling and Recovery UK has launched a visitor experience to allow local schools, groups and residents learn what happens to their waste.
Households in Aberdeen produce over 96,000 tonnes of waste every year, and around two thirds of it is sent to the Altens centre.
Guests to the facility’s new education and visitor facility will learn about where their various waste goes and see how the latest technology is used to ensure it is put to good use.
Yesterday, Tullos School’s eco-group was invited to visit.

Colin Forshaw, Suez’s operations manager at Altens East, said: “We are really excited about showing visitors the great work we do in putting the city’s waste to good use.
“We have invested in an exciting new visitor experience and we are looking forward to taking guests out in to the facility to see exactly what goes on.”
Aberdeen City Council operational delivery vice-convener Phillip Bell added: “The recycling plant is a fascinating place to visit as it really brings home what happens to your recycling materials after you’ve put them in your wheelie bin.
“We are committed to encouraging people to recycle as much as possible and the plant enables us to provide a recycling collection service that is easy for residents to use and at the same time ensures we maximise the quantity and quality of materials for recycling.
“The education and visitor experience is a fantastic resource, which will help visitors to understand what happens in the process and I’d urge people to come along and see for themselves.”
