A 21-year-old who was the only woman in her class is hoping to inspire others to consider a career in construction.
Rebecca Main graduated yesterday with a BSc (Hons) in construction management.
The first in her family to graduate, Miss Main hopes to encourage others to follow in her footsteps.
She said: “The most interesting aspect of the course was being the only female in my year to be studying construction management.
“You get used to working in an all-male environment – I wasn’t treated differently and was always included.
“It is still unusual to see female students entering the construction industry, but hopefully I can go on to prove that females can succeed in this field and maybe more could be done to encourage females to enter those courses in the future.”
Miss Main, from Aberdeen, started her university career studying architectural technology, but was soon drawn to construction.
Since then, she has had the chance to “put theory into practice” and visit a drilling rig in Dundee as we all as other construction sites in Aberdeen.
“There’s a lot of out of the classroom activities which was really cool,” she said.
“I enjoyed exploring the rig and seeing how things worked first hand.
“Now that I’ve graduated I’m thinking of going into the oil and gas industry.”
