Residents evacuated in city centre amidst bomb scare

People have evacuated from their homes as a bomb squad swooped on Aberdeen amid fears about a “suspicious device”.

Police and explosives specialists were called to the Rosemount area of the city at 8.20pm.

Residents of Wallfield Cresent were rushed from their homes yesterday evening after a call was made to police about a suspicious package.

Several city streets were cordoned off by police officers as a result of the fears about the package.

Within 20 minutes they had quickly cordoned off Skene Street to Rose Street, Esslemont Avenue to Skene Street, Esslemont Avenue to Rosemount Place.

Police also sealed off Wallfield Cresent, Wallfield Place, Wallfield Park, Wallfield Terrace, Albert Street ,Craigie Loanings and Whitefield Avenue to the public as a precautionary measure.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal were called in to advise on the situation and made their way from Edinburgh to the scene in the early hours of the morning.

Figures have shown that armed forces bomb squads were scrambled to the north and north-east 84 times in the past three years.

Police at the scene could seen guarding the access points of the cordon.
