Serial sex attacker jailed for 22 months after Aberdeen assault on Hogmanay

A north-east man has been jailed for committing a “serious and nasty” sexual assault.

Matthew Wood carried out the serious sexual attack on a woman on Hogmanay and continued to assault her the next day when he repeatedly punched her.

Wood, of Regent Court, Aberdeen, pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced via video link at Aberdeen sheriff court today.

Prosecutors said the incident took place in a two-bedroom flat when the 28-year-old was drunk and became aggressive.

He entered a bedroom with a lit cigarette – nearly burning his victim numerous times.

Wood managed to kiss her in a “forceful manner” after she had repeatedly told him to stop.

He continued the assault by putting his hand under her sport bra and gripped her “with force”.

She continued to ask him to stop and tried to pull his hands away as the attack became more intense.

The woman was eventually able to kick Wood off of her and the court heard that he left the room smiling.

At around 3pm the following day he punched her twice in the face.

Defence agent Bruce Macdonald said things were looking up for his client as he was now in a relationship with a young woman who had a “good effect on him”.

But Sheriff Graeme Buchanan was unmoved.

He said: “It was a serious and nasty sexual assault and, on a second occasion, another nasty assault when he punched a defenceless victim a number of times.”

The court heard that Wood had a history of committing sexual assault and violent crimes against women.

He was also sentenced for three other incidents that occurred between February and November last year, in which he pleaded guilty to all charges.

All together, he was sent to prison for 22 months and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
