Temperatures are poised to rise across the north-east this weekend as Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire enjoy the hottest day of the year so far today.

However, experts are warning sun-seekers to make the most of it with a dip on Sunday night bringing a colder start to Monday.

Today it will be mainly cloudy south of Aberdeen with the odd patch of light rain but otherwise dry with some bright or sunny intervals and a maximum temperature predicted at 16C.

Aberdeen itself will be warm today with a maximum temperature of 14C – about 4C higher than average for this time of year.

In Aberdeenshire, the Huntly, Insch and Banff areas will enjoy the best of the weather, basking in temperatures between 15-16C.

Moray will be the warmest area of the country with temperatures expected to reach up to 17C.

The Met office predicts Sunday will be dry with some sunshine, although colder with some night frost.

Monday will get off to a bright start but rain, hill snow, strong winds and even gales are possible later in the day across the Grampian region.

The warm spell is coming in the wake of tropical south-westerly air from Bermuda which hit the country yesterday, depositing rain on the west before drying out over the Highlands and leaving sunshine on the east coast.

However, the tropical weather will be overtaken by a blast of cold wind from Iceland which will bring spells of frost in the coming weeks.

Met Office Aberdeen duty forecaster Peter Sloss said: “The weather is the north-east is quite a contrast with the rest of the country which will be experiencing a lot of rain.

“It will be sheltered more by the Highland mountains meaning we will see some unseasonable temperatures – around 4C higher than average for this time of year.

“Inland areas of north Aberdeenshire will see around 15C and good spells of sunshine.

“On Sunday it will turn noticeably cooler across the country.

“The air from Bermuda will be taken over by air from Iceland on Sunday which will lead to cooler temperatures and even some frost spells overnight in some areas.

“It is a very changeable pattern for the week ahead.”
