An Aberdeenshire charity which sells second-hand goods to help those in need has celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Magpie in Banchory, formerly known as The Boxroom, has helped to give new life to thousands of tonnes of old furniture, clothing and other household goods which would otherwise be destined for landfill over the last two decades.

All cash generated by the charity goes into developing the project further through the provision of local jobs, and supporting the community through Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action as well as other groups that support vulnerable individuals and families.

The charity relies on a team of volunteers and staff, and regularly takes on individuals ordered to carry out community payback.

Magpie celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday with staff, volunteers, customers and Aberdeenshire’s depute provost Ron McKail.

Mr McKail said: “I am delighted to be here to represent Aberdeenshire Council and celebrate the work of Magpie over the past 20 years.

“In a society where we tend to throw away, I really applaud Magpie’s ethos of reusing, recycling and making new again second-hand furniture and household goods that have plenty of life left in them.

“Congratulations on this tremendous milestone.”

Magpie is based at Tillybreak Industrial Estate in Banchory, and runs a charity shop on Bridge Street in the town.
