A teacher in Inverbervie has celebrated 21 years of teaching local children French with a special socially distanced day of cake, songs and games with her pupils.

Jill Simpson initially started her lessons in Burgh Hall with only a handful of pupils, but today she teaches out of the old Clydesdale Bank building for between 50 and 60 local youngsters every week.

This week, to mark 21 years of helping pupils learn French, Ms Simpson and tutor Andrea Watt held an online party with their pupils, where they played games and sand Bon Anniversaire, or Happy Birthday, together.

Ms Simpson said: “It is brilliant to be able to offer language lessons in our small community in the north-east of Scotland and to see children developing great linguistic skills from an early age, as well as growing their confidence immeasurably, and now it’s fantastic to have the help of my tutor Andrea.

“Andrea and I usually teach approximately 60 children in 12 classes each week but due to the pandemic, instead of cancelling classes, we’ve simply taken them online.”

She added: “Andrea and I are both looking forward to a summer break now, but we are already making plans to start again in August which will be the beginning of the new academic year.”
