A north-east politician has waded into the debate on plans for a multi-million new home for Aberdeen FC on the outskirts of the city.
SNP MP Stuart Donaldson has launched his own survey into Aberdeen FC’s proposals for Kingsford Stadium, between Westhill and Kingswells, after concerns were raised about the development by locals.
The plans for the replacement of Pittodrie – which could feature a training academy, Aberdeen FC heritage centre and a string of facilities for the club and wider community – has sparked debate among north-east residents, particularly in Westhill.
MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, Mr Donaldson, said: “The proposed development at Kingsford has generated a lot of debate in Westhill and I have been contacted by residents both for and against the plans.
“I am launching this survey to get a better idea of the views of people living in Westhill so my representations to AFC and other relevant bodies can be as detailed as possible.
“It is important that the questions and concerns of residents are carefully considered and answered, particularly because those making the final planning decision will not be answerable to the people of Westhill.”
The No to Kingsford Stadium group is campaigning against the proposals, citing concerns that local infrastructure could not cope.
The group is also concerned about losing greenbelt land on the edge of Westhill.
However, many Dons supporters groups have thrown their weight behind the proposals – which the club hopes will allow it to “move forward”.
Last night, spokesman for the No to Kingsford Stadium group, Angus Jamieson, backed Mr Donaldson’s involvement – despite concerns around the survey.
He said: “We have some reservations about ensuring the survey appropriately reflects the views of residents and not just Aberdeen FC supporters.
“We absolutely commend this effort to understand the opinions of Westhill. The response may not be accurate because it is a public link.
“We have been inundated with messages of support. The main issues continue to be Westhill is a community separate from the city, it maintains it’s identity as separate from the city, this would break that.”
An Aberdeen FC spokesman said all opinions would be considered as part of the current public consultation into the plans.
He added: “We welcome the feedback. it is the time for feedback and the more we get, covering all range of opinions, is all we are after.”
