Final preparations underway for Macduff Lifeboat gala day

Macduff Lifeboat will be joined by the Coastguard for the gala day.
Macduff Lifeboat will be joined by the Coastguard for the gala day.

The final preparation are being put in place for a north-east town’s biennial gala day.

Macduff Lifeboat is hosting its event on August 20, when the port’s harbour and fish market will be transformed by volunteers who are aiming to raise much-needed cash for the charity that saves lives at sea.

Derek Mair, who is helping to organise this year’s gala, said efforts have been on-going since last year to make the event a success.

“Any money we raise from our gala day is used to support our lifesaving work along the coast around Macduff,” he added.

“I’d like to thank all the businesses and boat owners who have made donations to us so far. We are still accepting donations of raffle prizes and bottles.”

Lifeboat coxswain Chassey Findlay said he was looking forward to welcoming colleagues from Buckie and Fraserburgh who will attend the fun day.

A barbecue and free life jacket safety checks will also be offered to visitors.

He said: “The last all-weather lifeboat to be stationed at Macduff, Douglas Currie will also be in the harbour for the day.

“Visitors will be able to go on-board, meet the crews and look at the lifeboats.”

This year’s event will capped by the attendance of the coastguard and its rescue helicopter from Inverness, which will conduct a flyover during the day.

Macduff Lifeboat is still appealing to local businesses which want to donate to the event.

Yesterday, a spokesman said: “We are funded entirely by public donations and fundraising activities locally.

“Any money raised by Macduff lifeboat station stays in Macduff to help us continue our life saving work along our coast.”

The crew can be reached by email at macduff@rnli.org.uk

The gala day takes place on August 20, from 11am to 4pm.
