Peterhead RNLI volunteers are celebrating their fundraising success after donning their “yalla wellies” for an unusual 60-mile cycle.

Their charity ride, from their base along the old railway line to Fraserburgh and back, has raised £1,280 and counting for the life-saving RNLI charity.

Organiser and RNLI Peterhead volunteer Craig Aird said: “We got a great send-off in the morning and a brilliant welcome in to Fraserburgh with the Coastguard escorting us along the final part. Fraserburgh RNLI kindly put on food to refuel us for the return journey home.”

Some of the team had never cycled a distance before, and the old railway route tested them more than anticipated, turning out closer to 60 miles than the estimated 40.

“Everybody surpassed themselves on the day,” the 36-year-old added.

“It was a lot longer than we envisaged but well worth it.

“We’ve raised about £1,100 and another £180 in gift aid. There has been a lot of support, we’ve been very lucky.

“We raised a lot of smiles from people along the route who saw our wellies and were pleased that a number of people had read about the ride and turned out to support us along the way.”
