Man crashed car into wall of Peterhead fish plant after drunken birthday night out

Kaymen Sandison crashed his Ford Fiesta the morning after his birthday night out.
Kaymen Sandison crashed his Ford Fiesta the morning after his birthday night out.

A man caused thousands of pounds of damage by drunkenly crashing his car into a fish processing factory after celebrating his 25th birthday.

Kaymen Sandison marked his special day last month by visiting several pubs in Peterhead with friends, and “thought it would be prudent” to drive his grey Ford Fiesta home afterwards.

The trainee engineer, who was more than three times the alcohol limit, made a foiled attempt to flee the scene when police caught up to him .

Sandison was fined £1,050, and banned from driving for 15 months, when he appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday.

It was about 2am on Sunday, December 8, when he collided with the rear wall of Northbay Pelagic Ltd at the Kirk Street and St Peter Street junction in Peterhead.

Fiscal Ruaridh McAllister told the court that police officers came upon the chaotic scene while on patrol.

Mr McAllister said: “Officers saw the accused get out of the driver’s side of the car and run along Kirk Street.

“They apprehended the accused and he smelled of alcohol and was slurring his speech.

“He was asked who was driving the car at the time of the crash, but he refused to give a proper response.

“Sandison was taken to the police station where he gave a breath test of 74 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath, breaching the 22 mcg limit.”

The wall suffered extensive structural damage, with the cost of repairs estimated as £7,039.

Defence solicitor, Sam Milligan, said: “He had taken his car out but his intention was that he wouldn’t go back to it until the following day.

“Mr Sandison thought it would be a prudent position to drive home, and the affects of that have been felt since the incident.”

Sheriff Christine McCrossan put Sandison on a rehabilitation scheme for drink-driving.

She added: “I’ve decided to also give you a financial penalty and a period of disqualification given the level of alcohol shown in the test.”

Police sealed off part of Kirk Street for several hours after the crash, while Aberdeenshire Council cordoned off an area for “public safety” reasons due to the building sustaining damage.
