Yvie Burnett: All eyes on Hancock as celebrity dramas unfold

Could Tony Adams win Strictly? Image by Guy Levy/BBC.

In all the years I’ve been writing this column we have discussed many things.

To be fair there haven’t been a lot of subjects we haven’t covered.

But …. Have we ever talked about ‘cadis’ or is it ‘caddis’?

Perhaps Robbie Shepherd can confirm the spelling?

Now, do you know what it is?

I don’t think it sounds at all like what it is. In fact, I’ve had to constantly ask my Auntie Agnes to remind me of this word.

It’s one of those Doric words, though, like scunnered or driech, which are so perfect and don’t have an English equivalent. The word cadis is the fluffy dusty bits of stuff which gather under the bed or in the corners of the carpet.

I don’t know any English word which describes this stuff so cadis it is.

Now why am I talking to you about this?

Well, my weekend was full of cadis!

Room for improvement and a worthwhile purchase

I’ve been thinking for a while that my carpets either need a good clean or to be replaced, especially the stair carpet.

Having pets means that no sooner have you hoovered, its nearly time to do it all again.

The TV adverts for carpet cleaners, which miraculously make carpets look new again and clean your wood floors, are very persuasive and, as I had Ollie home for the weekend and he said he would help me, we decided to fork out for one.

It’s a little bit more of a faff than it seems in the adverts. I laugh at the way that in the advert they pour the dirty water out like it’s a cup of tea and it leaves the machine spotlessly clean.

Where on earth is their ‘cadis’?

Having said that, though, it’s well worth the purchase.

It took Ollie and I most of the day to move the furniture, hoover the rooms in preparation and then use the machine but the carpets do look like new and, having moved everything out, I did a major sort out at the same time.

I love that feeling of having achieved something like this.

When we finished, we went out for a pizza and then flopped on the sofa with our feet up.

Katya and Tony are firm fan favourites

Ollie didn’t need much persuasion to watch Strictly with me because Gordon and him are huge Arsenal fans so they are all rooting for Tony Adams.

Apparently at the recent Arsenal match with Chelsea, all the fans were singing ‘Tony Adams is winning Strictly’. I think Tony might have a real chance of winning.

I don’t think that’s unfair. I know it’s a dancing show but popularity has to come into it. Katya and Tony continue to be so entertaining. And, my goodness, if Tony can make people like Gordon and Ollie sit down and watch the show, he can attract a whole new audience!

I’m a Celebrity surprises

So what did we think of I’m a Celebrity?

Boy George has already started to moan and wasn’t happy with Charlene taking over the cooking, was he? In fact, he is a bit of diva, isn’t he? But he has earned that title with his job and it certainly makes for entertaining TV.

I think he is right about Charlene. She seems lovely but she certainly likes to be in control. There are going to be a few clashes of personality, I think!

But how much fun is Mike Tindall? I certainly hadn’t expected him to rap and he was word perfect!

Ant and Dec are their usual hilarious selves and you can tell they are so happy to be there in the sunshine.

Apart, of course, when it was absolutely chucking it down with rain and they needed their see-through brollies, while poor Babatunde had to do his scary challenge while getting soaked to the skin!

Speaking of, Babatunde is one of my favourites already. Smiley, funny and so likeable.

All eyes on Hancock

Matt Hancock, one of the late arrivals, enters the I’m a Celebrity camp. Photo by ITV/Shutterstock.

Of course, it was Matt Hancock we were all waiting to see. In fact, 10 million of us tuned in. Those were the highest viewing figures for a long time and I’m sure that seeing what he had to say was one of the things that brought in such a big audience.

That, and the fact we are back in the jungle instead of Wales. It somehow feels like Christmas is approaching when Ant and Dec are on our screens every night getting more and more tanned with all their games of golf!

Ant and Dec work hard but they do have a fabulous life. I bet they never have to get rid of their cadis!

Have a good week,

Yvie x
