Growing up, Becky Button had always played at nurses with her twin sister – but never imagined she would one day be graduating with a degree in the subject from the Robert Gordon University.

However, the support her late mum received while battling breast cancer inspired her to dedicate her life to helping others.

The former Aboyne Academy pupil graduated with distinction yesterday at the Aberdeen Music Hall, following in the footsteps of her twin, Kasia, who is already a nurse.

As she collected her bachelor’s degree in adult nursing, the 20-year-old said: “As a child, I grew up watching my mum fight breast cancer until she passed away aged 46.

“She spent many months in and out of ARI, so my exposure to attentive, caring and compassionate nurses at such a young age made nursing a natural career for me to want to pursue.

“It was kind of natural to progress into wanting to be a nurse, I’ve always enjoyed being around other people and caring for them, it just gives you such a rewarding feeling.

“Ever since I was six it was always my career choice. I think it’s because my twin sister, who is also a nurse, and I always joked around and played nurses at home.”

Now Ms Button is hoping to see the world in her chosen career.

“I definitely want to travel to Australia and join the flying crew one day,” she revealed.

“Because the outback is so large, they have to use planes instead of ambulances so I think that would be so exciting, but for the next few years I want to try get a job in Scotland.

“Me and my sister Kasia owe so much to our dad for supporting us through our training over the years.

“His help has made a huge difference and the results of all of our hard work are finally starting to come to fruition.”
