People of all ages can enjoy a day of science at venues across Aberdeen later this month as part of a Europe-wide celebration.

Explorathon 2016 will include a range of pub quizzes, movie screenings, live stand-up comedy, aiming to teach people about everything from archaeology to zoology.

From hands-on activities at the Aberdeen Science Centre to live demonstrations by experts from Aberdeen University, the day-long event seeks to highlight the hard work of researchers across the world in all forms of science, and promote it as a viable career path.

Explorathon coordinator Chris Croly said: “It’s all about bringing important research and researchers into the public eye in unexpected ways.

“The ethos is to take researchers out of their comfort zones and bring the latest groundbreaking findings they’re making to the people.

“It’s also important for us to show that working as a researcher is in itself a fantastic career option that many people don’t consider.

“And to do this we want to reach as many aspects of society as possible, so we’ve got a lot of things for families but we’ve also got events in pubs and bars to catch the interest of adults, it’s all about engaging with as many different people as possible and spreading the love of science and research.”

Nine different venues are hosting events at various times throughout September 30. Entry is free to all, bar Aberdeen Science Centre which will charge a £1 admission fee.
