Police were yesterday investigating after two vehicles burst into flames at a multi-storey car park in the city centre.
Fire crews evacuated the Denburn Car Park after smoke was seen billowing out the building.
More than 40 firefighters were scrambled to the scene to extinguish the blaze and help make the area safe.
The fire was extinguished shortly after they arrived but crews were then tasked with dealing with all the smoke which had spread to the rest of the car park.
No-one was injured as a result of the incident but the two cars involved were believed to have been left badly damaged on the ground floor.
Spa Street was closed off to traffic and members of the public while emergency crews worked at the scene. Dozens of people returning to their cars had to wait on nearby Skene Street until it was safe to go back in the building.
One car owner, Alexander Reith, said: “I parked my car here at around 3pm and came back and the car park was all up in smoke.
“I’ve been told it will be half an hour before I can get in, it’s very dramatic.”
Darren Riddell, station manager for the fire service in Aberdeen, was also at the scene.
He said the incident happened shortly after 4pm.
He said: “We’ve had two cars alight in the bottom of the car park.
“We are working with police over the next day or so to establish the cause.
“We managed to deal with the incident quickly and made sure everyone was evacuated and we’re now checking the whole building.”
The building was reopened to members of the public shortly after 6pm.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
A police spokesman said: “We are appealing for witnesses who were nearby at the time to get in touch and investigations are ongoing.”
