A couple have set out on an epic 2,000 mile journey in aid of a north-east lifeboat crew.

Billy and Yvonne Campbell from St Fergus began their drive to Spain at 6am yesterday to raise funds the RNLI Fraserburgh and cancer support charity Friends of Anchor.

They are taking part in the Benidorm or Bust rally which involves motorists getting behind the wheel of an old car and heading to the Costa Blanca resort.

Mr and Mrs Campbell covered 646 miles to Dover to the catch the ferry over to France before joining 150 other racers.

They opted for a 2004 registered Mercedes with 188,000 miles on the clock.  It cost them a mere £200.

Mr and Mrs Campbell are funding the entire trip themselves so all of the money the duo raise can go to their chosen charities.

The race starts in Calais this morning before heading south towards Spain and eventually arriving in Benidorm on Saturday.

Mr Campbell said: “Hopefully we’ll make the whole journey without any mishaps. It’s a lot of miles and hours on the road but we’re looking forward to it.

“It’s a lot of fun and it gives us a chance to raise money for two good local charities which are close to our hearts.”

Fraserburgh coxswain Vic Sutherland said it is going to be a “great adventure” and is pleased they will benefit from the cross continent trip

He said: “It’s very good that Billy and Yvonne have chosen us as one of their charities and everyone at Fraserburgh Lifeboat is very grateful.

“We wish them all the best on their trip and all the money they raise for us will help us save lives at sea.”
