Aberdeen road to close for eight weeks due to landslide

An Aberdeen road has been closed due to a landslip.

Kennerty Road in Culter has been closed as an emergency after a slippage of a nearby embankment.

The road closure, expected to be in place for eight weeks, will affect Kennerty Road from the junction of Millside Street to the junction of Kennerty Mills Road.

Council chiefs said the road’s structural stability would have been at risk if vehicles continued to use it.

A spokeswoman said: “The road has been closed due to further slippage of the embankment to the south west of Kennerty Bridge.

“The council is in the process of appointing a contractor to carry out the repairs and it is anticipated that the work will begin mid-July.

“The road will remain closed until the repairs have been made and the road stabilised.

“This could take up to eight weeks.

“We apologise for any convenience this causes to users.”

Alternative access to the area can be made from Station Road East.

The latest closure joins many across the city including Froghall Road, Links Place and Bedford Road.

And in Aberdeenshire the B979 Maryculter to Stonehaven, or Netherley, road will be shut until Friday.

Reconstructing the deteriorated Rob Roy Bridge in Peterculter has also began and will take around 26 weeks to complete at an estimated cost of £530,000.

The historic river crossing, which has existed for more than 200 years, is one of the primary routes for commuters travelling to and from Aberdeenshire from the west of the city.

Last night Lower Deeside councillor Marie Boulton said that the road had been closed for safety reasons.

She said: “We couldn’t take the risk after the slippage of even people walking there.

“We had planned on installing more light columns on Kettocks Mill Road but they will now have to be delayed until this road reopens.”
