Banffshire football club kick off campaign to win Press and Journal minibus competition

Tomorrow’s Cristiano Ronaldo could emerge from a Banffshire football team if it wins a new minibus.

Every year, children at Macduff Lions Football Club travel to and from Aberdeen for games against other junior teams.

But it is their parents who bear the brunt of the travel, with the volunteer club reliant on goodwill and volunteers to get children aged as young as three to matches.

Last night the non-profit club’s head coach Stuart Gray said it would be “phenomenal” for them if they could just jump on a bus.

“We’ve got about 130 kids involved from Macduff and the surrounding areas, from three-year-olds up to kids leaving primary seven.

“We’ve been on the go for about 25 years, and we’ve become a bit of a mainstay in the community. We’ve even had a couple success stories.

“Probably the most prominent would be Stephen Watt, who went to play for Chelsea, but there’s also been the likes of Scott Fraser, the Deveronvale captain, who started at Macduff Lions.

“The big thing for us is that we need to travel for a lot of our games. The leagues that we’re involved with are predominately in Aberdeen and it can be a lot to ask parents to take a weekend to travel.

“A minibus would allow us as coaches to take the kids and let them play even more football. It would be fantastic for us to be able to do that.”
