Staff at Robert Gordon University’s nursing and midwifery school have joined forces to help Aberdeen’s less fortunate this Christmas with a “reverse advent calendar”.
Every day, throughout December, academic and support staff at the school have been donating food, toiletries and other essentials to the food bank and support charity CFINE, and Alcohol and Drugs Action.
And more than 400 items have been contributed to the campaign.
Donald Todd, senior lecturer at the school, came up with the idea of giving on every day of the advent calendar, rather than receiving.
He explained: “Most people love advent calendars and getting a treat every day until Santa comes.
“But not everyone is so lucky. My colleagues and I felt that it was right that we do our bit to make Christmas easier for those families who might be struggling at this time of year.
“In the end, we managed to donate around ten boxes and two trollies of items that will hopefully go some way to spreading the festive spirit and improving the lives of people in the north east.”
Christine McLean, development worker at CFINE said: “We are delighted to receive donations from RGU. These will be distributed from our food bank at Poynernook Road over the next few weeks.
“We have seen a large increase in demand for emergency food parcels during the last couple of years and this time of year can be particularly hard on families and individuals.
“The donations from RGU will go a long way towards tackling hunger as part of a broader approach to tackling food poverty in the city.”
