A police investigation is underway after a doctor was found dead in a north-east operating theatre.

The body of consultant anaesthetist Dr Paul Holder was discovered at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by a colleague on Sunday afternoon.

The 44-year-old was employed by NHS Grampian and was involved in assisting and teaching students at the medical school.

Police say there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Professor Alan Denison, who heads up the medical school programme, said the news had come as a “great shock” to those who worked with Dr Holder.

In an email to staff and students, he said: “We are working closely with the anaesthetics department in Aberdeen to support them and the students who are attached there.”

An Aberdeen University spokesman said: “Staff and students at the medical school are saddened at the loss of our colleague.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

The sentiments were echoed by NHS Grampian. A spokeswoman said: “Our thoughts are with the bereaved at this time.”

Dr Holder’s death is being treated as unexplained, but police say it does not appear to be suspicious.

A report into what happened is to be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
