A toddler who has benefited from the “wonderful” assistance of a north-east charity has urged people to take part in a festive fundraiser for the cause.
Two-year-old Ben Okonich was born with renal failure and has been supported by the Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (Chas) charity for much of his life.
The youngster is now fronting a campaign urging people to take part in the fourth annual Aberdeen Santa Run to raise funds towards helping more children like him.
Ben’s mum, Susan Okonicha, said: “Chas has been wonderful to me and my family.
“When I’m not able to take Ben to his dialysis appointments, Chas takes him and cares for him, which is such a relief.”
Ben’s condition requires 24-hour care and means that the family has to travel to Glasgow to receive dialysis two to three times a week.
The annual family-friendly run will take place on Sunday, December 15, at the Aberdeen Sports Village and children of all ages are welcome.
Last year, almost 500 people braved the cold weather to complete the one-mile dash and 5k race, raising more than £2,500 for the national children’s hospice service.
Aberdeen community fundraiser, Emma Moore said: “The festive period can be a very difficult time for families who are caring for children with life-shortening conditions, and we help give families the greatest gift of all at Christmas – precious time together.”
