The business group which brought rooftop gardens, a Christmas village and creative lighting to Aberdeen has been given another five years to continue its work revitalising the city centre.

The city’s levy payers took part in a renewal ballot this week and 63% of those who voted chose to give Aberdeen Inspired a second term.

The group was set up in 2011 with the aim of improving the city centre and now plans to invest a further £6.5million.

It also hopes to create facilities for new enterprises by lobbying the owners of vacant properties to consider allowing discounts.

Alongside this there are also plans for a fresh initiative to clean up Union Square and set up more lighting projects.

Gary Craig, the group’s chief executive said: “I would like give my heartfelt thanks to everyone that took part in our renewal ballot.

“The past six weeks has been the most crucial in Aberdeen Inspired’s history and we are absolutely delighted to have been voted back for a second term.

He added: “I am hoping to get more festivals organised during the second term, starting with the jazz festival.”

“We are planning to invest a minimum of £6.5 million in the heart of Aberdeen in our next term and build on the positive work that our team has already carried out, playing a big role in reinvigorating our city centre.

“Our plans for the future are extensive and ambitious and we are looking forward to making them a reality.”
