The sun roof of the car was hit by the falling branch

Two elderly women had a lucky escape earlier today after a tree branch fell and smashed through the roof of the car they were in.

Passers-by watched on in horror on Great Western Road as the branch smashed through the glass sun roof of the grey Renault Clio.

The two occupants were covered in glass, but suffered only minor cuts.

Police and ambulance services were called to the scene at 3.55pm.

Tessa Varley, who had been working in the nearby TSB at the time, said: “I was stood at the desk when I just saw a car stop.

“I rushed out and saw the tree had fallen into it and the roof was smashed.

“There were two elderly women in the car and there was glass all over them and down their jackets.

“We shook them off and I took one of the ladies downstairs in the branch and she had a cut hand which was glued together by paramedics.”

The car had been being driven by a 69-year-old woman, whose son Gareth Innes rushed to her aid.

He said: “The car is my mum’s, she cut her hand and arm but it’s not too bad.

“The paramedics had a look at but she’s just gone home now.

“The sun roof had been smashed to bits as it was a direct hit, she was lucky that it didn’t go through the front of the car.”

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.55pm after a branch fell onto a car.

“Two women were treated for minor injuries at the scene.”

The car was recovered at around 5pm.
