Dumped lover warned to ‘control his behaviour’

A young Shetland man has been warned by a sheriff to control his behaviour if he wants to keep his freedom.

Andrew Patterson, 18, of 50 Sandveien, Lerwick, appeared from custody yesterday and admitted causing a breach of the peace by shouting and swearing near his home on Tuesday afternoon.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that the incident took place after Patterson’s pregnant girlfriend had thrown him and his possessions out of her house at the weekend.

He wanted to go to Aberdeen to “cool off”, and needed documents she had kept in the house.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said she started “balling and shouting” at him and he started shouting back, which is when the breach was committed.

Fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said that Patterson should have the threat of being locked up placed before him to encourage him to behave himself, and suggested he be placed on an anti social behaviour order which could mean custody if it was breached.

Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence for reports for one month and released Patterson on bail, saying he would consider either an ASBO or community payback order to get across the message that he had to behave himself in public.
