Urgent talks have been called for between Aberdeenshire Council and users of a north-east sports facility before someone gets hurt.
The Myrus Sports Centre in Macduff opened last year following a decade of work to bring new facilities to the port.
But a lack of parking at the popular sports hall has created chaos on the towns roads as locals are forced to double park on Duff Street.
Local councillor Hamish Partridge has now called for snap talks between users of the facility and council chiefs to try and find a solution before an accident happens.
He said: “It is unfair to blame the visitors and event organisers as insufficient parking has been supplied with the centre from Aberdeenshire Council to keep up with the demand – something that was mentioned and continually highlighted throughout the consultation process by both public and councillors.
“Further examination is required in the extension of the cemetery car park by possibly piping the burn and developing over it as well as the re-design of the planting around the new centre to accommodate more cars rather than extra maintenance costs and flower beds.”
The call for action comes following a sports event organised on Sunday which drew hundreds of people to the north-east port.
Images of the roads afterwards were shared online to highlight the plight of motorists trying to navigate to and from the facility.
Mr Partridge has previously raised concerns about Duff Street at peak collection and drop-off times at the local primary school, when similar issues on the road occur.
In a letter sent to the local authority’s roads department, Mr Partridge branded the situation as an “accident waiting to happen”.
Last night, council area manager Margaret-Jane Cardno said there were “no plans” for improvement works at Myrus.
“There are no plans at this stage to develop additional parking infrastructure at Myrus Sports Centre however a series of actions have been agreed to address parking concerns,” she said.
“These focus on car usage and actively encouraging alternative forms of transport.
“These actions will be implemented and monitored over the next six months and the situation further reviewed at that time.”
