WATCH: All schools and nurseries to close across Scotland says Sturgeon

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that all schools and nurseries will close across Scotland at the end of the week.

Schools have now lost too many staff to continue as normal she said.

The First Minister wanted to reassure teachers and school staff that the government would work with them as they know what is best for children.

“The Scottish Government is still working out the finer detail of what this will all mean” she said.

“We are expecting further information from the Scottish Government on what will be happening for older pupils regarding exams and the Council will provide further updates as they come.”

Speaking about the effect this would have to pupils in the Highlands, Donna Manson, Chief Executive of the Highland Council said: “The Highland Council will need time to assess the impact of this announcement on our workforce, and our communities as well as on the provision of support for our young people.

“Further information will be forthcoming tomorrow, and please be assured that our central education team have been working extensively on providing learning materials for use at home.

“More detail will be given to parents and carers and pupils from the Council later this week.

“As was intimated by the First Minister, details about free school meals will again be forthcoming in the days ahead.”

The announcement follows the death of another patient in the country earlier today.

Nicola Sturgeon said: “It is with sadness this afternoon that I have to confirm the death of one more patient.”

She said her thoughts were with the families of those who have died.

As of today, there are 227 confirmed positive cases of Covid-19 across Scotland.
