Thomas Mikkelsen has struggled for game time at Ross County.

Ross County came from behind to defeat Hamilton Accies 2-1 and record their first home league victory of the season.

The two goals came from two of manager Owen Coyle’s second-half substitutes, with Alex Schalk and Thomas Mikkelsen getting the decisive goals after Greg Docherty had put the Lanarkshire men ahead.

County made one change from the side that was defeated 2-1 by Hearts the previous weekend, with midfielder Ross Draper replaced by attacker Billy Mckay.

The Staggies looked lively in attack and threatened on 12 minutes, when Jason Naismith’s low cross came all the way through to Davis Keillor-Dunn, whose effort from a wide angle hit the side netting.

County continued to look dangerous, with another Naismith delivery met by the head of Billy Mckay, who was denied by a fine save by goalkeeper Ryan Fulton.

Naismith had a chance of his own on the half-hour mark when Keillor-Dunn’s delivery landed for him, but he blasted his effort wide of Fulton’s goal.

County kept up the pressure at the start of the second-half, with Craig Curran flashing a strike over before Naismith’s fizzing cross was spilled by Fulton, who was able to smother at the second attempt to thwart Mckay.

Accies took the lead from a corner on 53 minutes however, when Steven Boyd’s delivery picked out the head of the untracked Docherty, who was able to steer the ball past Scott Fox.

Boyd had another opportunity moments later when he was teed up by Botti Biabi’s lay-off, however he sent his shot over the bar from the edge of the box, before Docherty sent another effort wide on the break.

Coyle changed his forward line midway through the second-half, with Curran and Mckay making way for Mikkelsen and Schalk, and it paid off on 71 minutes. Naismith charged down the right before delivering an inch-perfect cross for Schalk, who bulleted a header past Fox from eight yards.

Hamilton were close to regaining their lead four minutes later though, as substitute Antonio Rojano’s cross was only partially cleared by Davies into the path of Dougie Imrie, but his first-time volley struck the side-netting.

County searched for a winner, with Michael Gardyne shooting straight at Fulton from Kenny van der Weg’s cross. The breakthrough did come on 86 minutes on the counter-attack, with Schalk setting up fellow substitute Mikkelsen to coolly slot past Fulton for a welcome three points.
