Peterhead defender Aidan McIlduff believes adding Karim Belmokhtar to the Blue Toon squad would give the team greater options going forward.

McIlduff has been impressed with what Belmokhtar has offered since he came to Balmoor on trial.

The French-Algerian striker, who played for Edinburgh City this season, scored in the second half against Cowdenbeath at the weekend after coming on as a substitute.

Peterhead manager Jim McInally expressed a desire to add Belmokhtar to the squad permanently and is in talks with the player’s agent.

McIlduff said: “I remember playing against him earlier in the season against Edinburgh and he was a very difficult, tricky player.

“He’s maybe a bit different to what we’ve got and you can see he’s a very technical player. It also gives us the option to play two up front.”

McIlduff feels the performances Russell McLean has delivered in the absence of Rory McAllister show the striker’s potential.

Teenager McLean scored a hat-trick at Annan and opened the scoring in Peterhead 2-0 win at Central Park on Saturday.

McIlduff said: “There was a lot of pressure on him with Rory being our main striker but he’s come in and done really well.”

McIlduff should line up for the Blue Toon tonight when they entertain Clyde on home soil.

A win would take them top of League 2 on goal difference but McIlduff said: “We have to focus on ourselves just now, rather than what other teams like Montrose are doing. If we do that, the table will take care of itself. “We struggled against Clyde last time but if we do the right things tonight, we should come out on top.”
