Scotland have been drawn alongside Albania and Israel in the UEFA Nations League.

Scotland have been drawn against Albania and Israel in the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

The Scots are in a three-team group in League C and will play their first group game in September, with further matches in October and November.

Albania qualified for their first major tournament two years ago at the European Championships but missed out on the World Cup, finishing third in their qualifying group.

Israel, captained by former Chelsea and West Ham defender Tal Ben Haim, have not qualified for any competition since the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Finish top of the group and Scotland – still without a manager – will be promoted to League B for the next iteration of the tournament in 2020. However if they finish bottom they will be relegated to League D.

The tournament also provides an alternative route to qualifying for the European Championships. Each league has four play-off places and if the winner of a group has already qualified for the Euros, the next best team is awarded a play-off spot. The 16 teams will be split into four groups, with a semi-final and final to determine who progresses to Euro 2020.

Wales and Republic of Ireland were drawn together in a League B group, alongside Denmark. Northern Ireland, also in League B, will face Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

League A nation England were drawn against Spain and Croatia.

The four winners of the League A groups will go on to the Final Four next year to compete for the Nations League trophy.
