Scotland head coach Shelley Kerr is daring to dream of a Swiss slip-up as Scotland women’s national team bid to make history today.
The Scots face Albania today (4pm) knowing if they beat a side they thrashed 5-0 at home and Switzerland fail to beat Poland they will qualify for their first World Cup finals.
Kerr knows the Swiss remain favourites but hopes the Poles can do her side a huge favour today.
She said: “Our objective hasn’t changed since the first game of the campaign. We want to qualify for the finals in France next summer and we’ve gone into every game trying to win it.
“We’re sitting equal on points with a really good Switzerland team which is the Pot A side in our group and let’s see what happens.
“They’ve got a really tough game in Poland, I can vouch for that.
“This campaign has been a success in that we’ve developed and matured as a team and it’s a huge credit to the players.
“We have to see what happens against Albania first but we know it will not be easy.
“We’re ready to go again and we have to be as I think it will be a tough game for them in Poland.”
The Scots beat Switzerland 2-1 in Paisley on Thursday to take their bid for qualification to the final game and with victory in Albania today assuring her team of a play-off place at least Kerr is promising an attacking approach.
She said: “I couldn’t have asked for any more from the team against Switzerland. They were magnificent against a Swiss team boasting players who play at some of the top teams in Europe and I was extremely proud to beat them.
“We’re here to entertain and we’ve implemented a new philosophy and style of play which the players have bought into.
“Our game in Poland showed that as even people who don’t watch Scottish women’s football took it in so to follow that great comeback by beating a top Swiss side in front of a record home crowd is fantastic.
“Albania is going to be tough. The important thing has been ensuring the players rest and recover which is why we gave them Friday off to see their families before flying out to Albania.
“Whatever happens we want to keep our momentum going.”
