Plans launched for 374 bedroom student accommodation in Aberdeen

Plans have been launched to convert the site of a former snooker club in the centre of Aberdeen into student accommodation.

Property developer Downing has applied for planning permission to build a 374-unit block on John Street near the Woolmanhill roundabout.

The site was once the Ambassador Snooker Club which closed its doors in 2009.

Last year Union Hanover Securities launched plans for a £35million luxury hotel on the same spot but was forced to abandon these as a result of the oil industry downturn.

The brownfield site has been derelict since September.

Paul Houghton, development director at Downing, said it would rejuvenate the area.

He said: “Our proposals represent a substantial investment in Aberdeen and, if our planning application is successful, will be Downing Students’ fourth development in Scotland.

“In addition to providing the city with affordable, much needed student beds, the building will transform a previously derelict site, rejuvenating the surrounding area.”

The proposals have been prepared by architects Fletcher Joseph Associates, who say material chosen for the development will ensure it fits the character of the city.

A statement said: “The materials chosen for the scheme aim to reference both historic and contemporary elements of Aberdeen.

“A grey brick is to be used in a nod to the colour associated with the Granite City, accompanied by aluminum cladding panels.

“The feature tower will be clad in contrasting ceramic panels, complementing the dynamic, stepping form of the site.

“The facade will be split into frames that echo the classical proportions of the former university building opposite, leading the eye along the street and helping the development to blend with the neighbouring properties.”

If plans are approved it is hoped the building will be completed by the end of the summer of 2018, allowing students to move in for the following academic year.
