A group of north-east school pupils were among the passengers stranded as a result of the IT failure.

Pupils from Westhill Academy were in California when the BA systems failed and were delayed by 24 hours.

It is not known how many youngsters were on the trip, who were understood to be in third year, but they were due to fly back from San Francisco when the travel chaos unfolded.

Following the delay, they were expected to arrive at Heathrow Airport yesterday afternoon to catch a connecting flight back to Aberdeen.

Last night, the school’s rector said the pupils were in “good spirits” despite being caught up in the situation.

Derek Thompson said: “The children were 24 hours late in leaving San Francisco and should be arriving into London this afternoon, if all goes to plan they should all be home by tonight.

“I have been in frequent contact with the group and have been assured that the young people are in good spirits and have

been absolutely superb in dealing with the situation.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the staff both here and in America for the fantastic way they have dealt with the situation.”
