Community meeting over Hazlehead hotel plans

A community meeting will be held in Aberdeen next week to discuss a proposed £40million hotel and country club development.

Council bosses have granted planning permission in principle for Carlton Rock’s vision for a five-star hotel, country club and horse riding centre on green belt land near Hazlehead Park.

The firm will now develop detailed plans for the scheme, which will be subject to further consultation and committee approval.

Craigiebuckler and Seafield Community Council is now holding an open meeting on Tuesday to discuss the project. It will be held at the Douglas Lounge of Craigiebuckler Church at 7.30pm.

Proposals for the massive scheme first emerged in 2015 and feature a 200-bed hotel, spa, swimming pool, function and conference facilities, restaurants and a horse riding centre.

In May that year, councillors backed the plans by 28 votes to seven amidst significant concern about the scale of the project from residents who fear there will be an increase in traffic and loss of green space.

Plans then stalled in 2016 as Carlton Rock and the council failed to reach agreement over the level of developer contributions required.

Carlton Rock boss Alan Massie said the scheme showed that “confidence was returning” to the beleaguered city economy.

Hazlehead, Queens Cross and Countesswells independent councillor Jennifer Stewart urged anyone interested to attend the meeting.

She said: “I certainly understand the concerns of the local community about this proposal and I would encourage anyone interested to go along.

“In a general sense I hope that any developer takes on the concerns of local people when developing their proposals.”
