Plans lodged to transform Macduff Squash club into flats

Plans have been lodged to transform a derelict squash club into affordable housing.

GP Waypoint Design is seeking consent to knock down Macduff Squash Club and turn it into new flats.

The club, behind Macduff Medical Practice, has been closed since 1975.

If the planning application is approved, eight to 10 flats would be built on the site.

GP Waypoint Design has lodged the application on behalf of Albert Milne, who runs Deveron Coaches Coach and Bus Hire.

Mr Milne said he was inspired to transform the squash club due to Macduff’s need for affordable housing.

He has owned the squash club and while it remains closed, says courts still exist within the building and he occasionally uses them.

He said: “I wanted to do something different with the property.

“All the flats would be affordable – Macduff really does need affordable housing, far more of it.

“It would bring a wee bit more to the community.

“It’s quite a big site and perhaps we  could fit in up to 10 flats overall.”

Jenny Saunders, secretary of Banff and Macduff community council, added: “The community certainly does need affordable housing.

“I know members have concerns about a lot of empty old houses being converted, but if this is an old and empty property then that would surely be very helpful, especially if it is tailored toward first time buyers or is affordable housing.”
