Councillors have backed plans to improve road safety near a north-east primary school.
Members of the Banff and Buchan area committee yesterday agreed to back the scheme to encourage more pupils of South Park Primary to walk or cycle to school and improve crossings on Philorth Avenue.
A public consultation was held on the proposals in June, with residents, parents and the community council the chance to have their say.
It found that 77.8% supported the aim to discourage parking at junctions.
Councillor Doreen Mair told the committee yesterday: “The first priority must be the safety of the children. There have been several incidents where children have been hit by cars and this is a problem that has been going on for a long time.”
Councillor Charles Buchan agreed that “children’s safety should come first” but noted the problems the scheme aims to tackle is not exclusive to South Park Primary School as he said “other schools have similar problems.”
