A Jack Russell has been rescued and returned safely to her owner after falling down a cliff at Cruden Bay.

Sparky was out for her morning walk near the coastline at New Slains Castle on Saturday when she slipped and became stranded at the foot of the cliff.

Coastguard rescue teams from Cruden Bay and Macduff were scrambled to the area following reports of a stranded dog.

Equipped and trained for rope rescue, a technician was lowered down the cliff face to reach Sparky’s location.

With nowhere to turn, the pooch jumped across to the other side of the gully, out of reach of the rescue officer.

Following a number of failed attempts to lure her back with treats, the RNLI Peterhead lifeboat crew stepped in to assist.

The crew navigated their smaller craft into the narrow gully and following some persuasion, the lifeboat crew was able to assist with securing Sparky in their specialist animal rescue bag.

The pooch was safely recovered to the top of the cliff before being reunited with her owners.

She was safely checked over by the team and escaped without injury.

Advice to dog owners wandering near the coastline

HM Coastguard has now issued some advice to local dog owners to help keep their four-legged friends safe while walking along the coast.

Owners are being urged to always keep their dog on a lead near cliffs and coastal paths, and stay away from the edges, which can be crumbly and slippery.

Anyone with concerns is being asked to contact the coastguard.

In a post on social media, they wrote: “If there’s any doubt about your safety or the safety of your four-legged friend, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
