A man has been killed in an accident at a north-east recycling centre.
Police and the Health and Safety Executive have both launched investigations following the tragedy at EIS Waste Services’ premises in Nigg.
The victim of the accident is believed to be in his 30s.
He will not be named until next of kin have been informed.
The emergency services were called to the EIS plant around 2.30pm yesterday.
It is understood the man had died before fire brigade and ambulance crews reached the scene.
A police spokeswoman said: “Police and the HSE are making inquiries following the death of a male in his 30s in the Nigg area.
“Inquiries are at an early stage and are ongoing to establish the circumstances. As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
An ambulance service spokesman said: “We did receive an emergency call at about 2.30pm, we sent two ambulances but no one was taken to hospital.
An HSE spokeswoman confirmed the organisation was working with police at the scene.
A spokesman from EIS Waste Services said the firm “wouldn’t be commenting” on the matter.
The company provides skip hire and recycling services in the north-east, including collection, treatment and waste disposal.
Last night, local residents and councillors said they were shocked by the incident.
One neighbour said: “It’s terrible news to hear that someone so young has lost their life and I’m sad for everyone who knows him.
Another resident said they saw a number of emergency crews entering the plant.
North Kincardine councillor Carl Nelson, said: “It comes as a shock to hear this news and it is clearly a very tragic accident.
“I am keen to question what it could have been that caused this incident and I am pleased to hear that a full investigation is being launched.
“The health and safety at plants such as this is usually incredibly strong.”
Nigg and Cove councillor Stephen Flynn, added: “My thoughts are with his family at this time after what is an incredibly shocking incident.”
